Process

From Vision to Form: The Sculpture Process

1. Consultation & Concept Development

  • Dialogue: We begin with a conversation—about your space, intent, or the emotion you wish to evoke. Private commissions might stem from personal stories; public works often engage community narratives.

  • Inspiration: John shares sketches, maquettes (small-scale models), or material samples to align on aesthetic and thematic direction.

  • Outcome: A written proposal with timeline, budget, and visual references.

“The best sculptures are born from listening—both to the client and the material.”

Design & Maquette

  • Handcrafted Models: John creates a detailed maquette in clay, wax, or 3D-printed resin, depending on the project’s scale and complexity.
  • Feedback Loop: You’ll review the maquette digitally or in-person, with up to [X] rounds of refinements.
  • Technical Planning: For large-scale works, structural engineers may collaborate to ensure stability and safety.

Material Selection

  • Ethical Sourcing: Stone from sustainable quarries, reclaimed metals, or locally felled timber. John’s network includes trusted suppliers worldwide.
  • Material Tests: Samples are stress-tested for durability (especially for outdoor installations).
  • Client Involvement: Option to visit the studio or quarry to witness raw materials firsthand.

Fabrication

Techniques Tailored to the Project:

  • Direct Carving: Chiseling stone or wood by hand, embracing the material’s natural fractures.
  • Metal Casting: Lost-wax method for bronze, with patinas customized to your environment.
  • Assemblage: Welding or joining reclaimed elements into dynamic forms.

Studio Visits: Clients may schedule appointments to observe work-in-progress (or receive weekly photo updates).

Finishing & Patina

  • Surface Alchemy: Hand-polishing stone to a soft glow, applying chemical patinas to metal for color/depth, or charring wood for texture.
  • Environmental Adaptation: Coatings are chosen for UV/weather resistance (outdoor works) or tactile intimacy (indoor pieces).

Installation & Unveiling

  • Seamless Placement: John oversees installation, whether it’s a pedestal in a garden or a suspended piece in a corporate lobby.
  • Documentation: Professional photos/videos of the installed work for your archives.
  • Optional: Live unveiling event with artist talk or community workshop.
